KB7RHI's emergency field station update using the HP Stream 7 tablet
The HP Stream 7" tablet provides a good choice for digital field operations. The Stream 7 has a SINGLE micro-USB connection that must be used for both data I/O and charging. The good news is there is a dongle by Dell that does both simultaneously. Many thanks to K10Q and KB6BT for finding and testing the Dell dongle.
Be advised that currently the ITSHFBC propagation program using the Tarma installer is not working with the Windows 8.1 OS with this tablet. The work around is to go to www.greg-hand.com/hf.html, then select HFWIN 32, then select versions, latest...then select 4th from the top ITSHFBC 070415.exe 11-FEB-2009. The Winlink Admin team has been advised of this problem and will be awaiting the fix. Currently going to the Winlink FTP site and trying to download the ITSHFBC with a tablet running Windows 8.1 will not work.
For easier operations just use a BT mouse and BT keyboard. For emergency power in the field, a Powerwerx USB buddy 12V to USB 5V converter will provide the power . By using an inline USB meter such as the Abovetek USB voltage and power meter, you can see the power needs of the tablet. Additional note, the power throughput with the Dell dongle is less than with a single charging only cable connection to the Stream 7.
Testing done with packet and pactor only so far.
