Rig Control of my IC706MK2G with RMS Express
Submitted by w8nyy on Fri, 04/30/2010 - 03:28.
I have no issue with controlling the IC-706MK2G when I use my BlueTooth laptop and RMS Express. It's just when I'm using the USB cable connected to the computer from the SCS Pactor to the computer. The connection from the Pactor modem is a data cable going from the rig control out on the SCS Pactor modem going to the C-IV input on the
706. The set up calls for the C-IV address which according to my Icom set up is
58h and as the instructions in the Help file say, I included the h in the
address as 58h. When I go to open the Session as WL2K Pactor it goes to
initialize the modem and shuts down the RMS Express program all together.
Essentially a crash of the program.
I tried it both with the h in the hex set up of the C-IV address and without the
h. It will key up the all right when I can get it to at least not crash but it
won't change the frequency. Now RMS Express just crashes. By the way, I did
check the firmware on the SCS PTCIIusb Bluetooth Pactor and it's 4.0 so that's
not it.
My SCS PTCIIusb BlueTooth worked perfectly with Airmail and Rig Control.

The feedback I got on the
The feedback I got on the Yahoo forums (Winlink and Winmor)was to use 00 as the C-IV address and not to include the h in the address. Still nothing. Strange that there is no issue with Airmail and controlling the IC706MK2G either with the USB cable or via BlueTooth but no control via the RMS Express program. I think we can conclude that this is a bug in the RMS Express code.
Additionally, with the auto download of the RMS stations via the propagation software, I don't see any way to manually update the RMS list with the private EMCOM list of RMS stations unless that's being done automatically via the download.
I wonder if anyone actually reads this forum. Hmm.

According to the notes on the Spreadsheet on Farallon's Website, the Address is supposed to be set to 00. Maybe that will help. if not, call Gary Wood K6AUD @ Farallon 415-331-1924 I couldn't find the spreadsheet link again.

I'm new to EmComm and have never used any digital modes. I would like to know if the USB port now appearing in new radios are supported or am I restricted to "converters?" I'm currently using HRD 5.0b with Win7Pro(x64), via USB with success. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thought I would try a reply to a post. Not sure if anyone is reading them, but here goes.
If you are asking "does the USB ports appearing in radios really work?", I can answer that in reagrds to the ICOM 7600 and 7200, YES. I had to get the drivers from the ICOM web site,(the owners manuals are weak in regards to the USB port).
I installed the driver first, then turned on the radio. It found it, installed the drivers and assigned a port. I use Lenovo computers, desk top and lap top, both with Win7 (x64), no issues. The same com port comes up whenever I boot up.
Airmail and Winmor work with the radios, rig control as advertised. My SCS modem is an SCS USBII, and I use it via its USB com port for it's connection, and the rig control in both RMS and Airmail set for the radios' CIV control via it's assigned com port. CIV set at 9600, and 00 works as an assigned address.
As a side note both radios built in soundcard work well to/from the computer as a CODEC device. Nice feature as I got rid of the rigblaster and it's assorted cables.
Anyrate, with a minimum of cables I can do soundcard software and my SCS modem, so YES the USB ports do work on these two radios.
