Solo Circumnavigator Ends Voyage Amid Stormy Weather
Submitted by W3QA on Tue, 04/29/2008 - 17:28.
Last Sunday, April 27th, day 218 of his non-stop voyage, Glenn Wakefield undertook a difficult and personal decision to end his world circumnavigation aboard Kim Chow. On April 23rd, his last WL2K reported position, Glenn reported difficult weather conditions and injuries to his ribs, making it difficult for him to talk loudly enough into his amateur radio rig. On April 24th, Glenn reported worsening weather with 50 knots of wind and 6-meter swells, and that Kim Chow had rolled over. He and the boat had sustained damage. On coordination via amateur radio with the Royal Navy and Navy personnel at the Maritime Center of Argentina, arrangements were made for assistance by the Argentine ship Puerta Deseado, and overflights by an Argentine P3 Orion aircraft.
On Sunday, he was aboard the Puerto Deseado, and today, Tuesday, April 29th, he was transferred to an Argentina Coast Guard vessel and expects to arrive in Argentina late Wednesday. Glenn reports he has been very well cared for on aboard the Puerto Deseado and is feeling much better.

The Winlink Development Team is grateful this hardy voyager is okay. Fair winds, Glenn.
